Social Liberals into Libertarians

I had the opportunity to visit with some new friends in Frisco, CO over the weekend and the conversation turned to politics, possibly dangerous territory in a new friendship.

Adam had mentioned something about gays and gay rights and that he was a far left liberal because he believed gays should be given similar status as straight couples.  I’d picked up previously that he’s also a fiscal conservative and asked him about this.

“Adam, it doesn’t sound like you’re a far left liberal, it sounds like you’re a believer in freedom. That’s more of a libertarian view,” I quipped.  His reply was “YES, that’s exactly where I’m coming from!”

While we’ve traditional pegged people as conservatives or liberals, the idea of individual liberty and small government transcends these neat little labels that oversimplify peoples’ beliefs.  Liberty loving people are most likely to support the concept of living your life and making your own choices as long as you don’t interfere in the rights of others, maximizing personal choice, and limited government, by far the most moral system out there.

After calling attention to this, we then engaged in a spirited and fun conversation on health care reform, the cap and trade hoax, and economics.

These principles of freedom and liberty are what will united people and we hope to see these philosophies return to mainstream political parties in the near future to give people a true voice.
